Not every cassette filled with instrumentals is a beat tape. Not every beat maker is a producer. Not all the music you pump into your headphones is headphone music. And then there is ALXNDRBRWN.

The Alex Brown Project is a zone of its own, a word-free sector of sound where the magic lies in the subtleties. It is a collection of collages that invite you to acquaint yourself with the vowel-less music-maker behind Sage Francis’ classic track “Grace.” The Baltimore, Maryland-based producer dug in deep and and transformed his experiences into a series of moods that set the scene for the journey that was the catalyst for him to create TABP - a bit of sadness, a feeling of closure, the epiphany of clarity. A dip into despair followed by the achievement of self-love, and finally, of happiness.

“The project encapsulates every feeling that I went through in 2019,” says BRWN (born Mathew Alexander). “In that year I experienced extreme depression and anxiety that almost took me. But I am here and proud to say I worked very hard at conquering all those negative feelings and thoughts, and that work brought me the most joy and love I have ever experienced for myself. This album represents a dark time and a transition into the light, an understanding that I am strong and worth something. I hope to reach people who share that struggle and them know that they are loved and never alone.”

The lo-fi soundscapes work best as one cohesive listen, but the album’s centerpiece is a song called “Drifter”: “That track was made at a moment in time where I felt helpless and resorted to doctors to keep me drugged up so I didn’t have to feel anything. I was too afraid to face my reality. I felt like a wandering drifter in this life. No direction, no inspiration to live, and just clueless on who and where I was. Not physically where I was, but mentally. The water sounds represent the consumption of anything and everything to ease the pain. Which actually made it worse, making me drown in it all.”

The water embedded in “Drifter” also serves as a reminder that the same thing that can pull us under also makes us float. ALXNDRBRWN’s musical trip brings us out of the shadows and into the sun, the place where he ultimately came to understand the comfort of creation.

“Really I just love playing with sounds. I can’t think of a better thing to do with my time,” says Alexander. “I just hope people enjoy this project as much as I did creating it.”
